Kathgodam is a peaceful town located at the foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, India. As the last major railhead before ascending into the scenic hill stations of the region, Kathgodam acts as a gateway to popular destinations such as Nainital, Bhimtal, and beyond. Once part of the twin townships with Haldwani, Kathgodam has its own identity, offering travelers a scenic starting point for their Himalayan adventures. The town is surrounded by lush greenery, the ever-changing beauty of the mountains, and the calm atmosphere that sets the tone for journeys into the higher altitudes. Whether you’re heading for a spiritual retreat or an exploration of nature, Kathgodam is the place where the plains meet the hills, welcoming every visitor with its serene charm.

Itinerary

7:00 AM – Begin your spiritual and scenic journey as you depart from Kathgodam towards Pithoragarh. Along the way, stop to visit Kainchi Dham, Chetai Golu Devta Temple, and the ancient Jageshwar Dham temples. These are significant spiritual landmarks, each with a deep historical and religious significance.

  • Kainchi Dham: Established by the revered Saint Neem Karoli Baba in the 1960s, this peaceful ashram is devoted to Lord Hanuman.
  • Golu Devta Temple: Known as the "God of Justice," Golu Devta's temple, built in the 12th century, stands as a testament to faith and justice.
  • Jageshwar Dham: A valley of more than 100 ancient stone temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, often called the "Valley of Gods."
  • Pithoragarh: Also known as “Shor Valley,” Pithoragarh is the third-largest city in the Kumaon region. It serves as a gateway to several trekking routes and the Adi Kailash Om Parvat Yatra.
  • Arrive in Pithoragarh for a warm welcome and overnight stay.

After an early breakfast, set out towards Dharchula, a picturesque town perched by the Kali River, bordering Nepal. Upon arrival, proceed with paperwork for the Inner Line Permit. Since you'll be near the international border with Nepal, this permit is essential for further travel.

  • Dharchula: The unique geography of this town, nestled between high ridges, gives it the appearance of a stove from a bird’s-eye view. A visit to the Rung Museum and a taste of local delicacies like dumplings add to the cultural experience.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Dharchula.

  After breakfast, embark on an enchanting journey to Nabi Village, the base camp for Adi Kailash. The route is filled with breathtaking views of cliff-hanging mountains, gushing rivers, and snow-clad peaks. En route, visit historic villages like Malpa, Budhi, Chialekh, Garbyang, and Gunji.

  • Malpa: Known for one of the most significant tragedies of the Himalayas in 1999.
  • Chialekh: A paradise where the army checks Inner Line permits.
  • Garbyang: Don’t miss out on purchasing sea buckthorn vinegar from here.
  • Gunji: This village offers a diversion to Om Parvat and the ancient Kailash Mansarovar route.
  • Overnight stay in a cozy homestay at Nabi village.

In the early morning, take a 2-hour drive to witness the “Miracle of Nature” – Om Parvat, where snow lies in the shape of the sacred 'Om' symbol. This breathtaking sight is a must for spiritual seekers. Spend time meditating, soaking in the divine energy of Shiva. If permitted, visit Kalapani and enjoy the beauty of the Mahakali Temple.

  • Om Parvat: As described in the Skanda Purana, Om Parvat is one of the eight sacred Om symbols. Witnessing this divine manifestation on the mountain will leave you spellbound.
  • Kalapani: The source of the Kali River, where one can feel the powerful energy of the Goddess Kali.
  • Return to Nabi village in the evening, where a cultural program awaits, followed by an overnight stay.

After breakfast, head to the sacred Adi Kailash, also known as Shiva’s oldest abode. The journey to Jyolingkong is an adventure, with challenging yet awe-inspiring landscapes at every turn. En route, admire the Pandav Fort at Kuti Village. Upon arrival at Jyolingkong, trek or ride a pony to Parvati Sarovar and take in the serenity of this divine lake. If health permits, continue the trek to Gauri Kund near the base of Mount Adi Kailash. In the evening, enjoy a peaceful time with the Rung community, learning about their unique Himalayan lifestyle. Overnight stay in Nabi village.

After breakfast, depart Nabi village and return to Dharchula. The rest of the day is free for shopping, exploring Nepal, or simply unwinding. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Dharchula.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Patal Bhuvneshwar, taking in panoramic views of the Shivalik Ranges and quaint Himalayan villages. On arrival, visit the Patal Bhuvneshwar Cave, a mythical limestone cave said to house Lord Shiva and 33 crore deities. Overnight stay at a resort or hotel in Patal Bhuvneshwar.

After breakfast, drive back to Kathgodam Railway Station, carrying with you unforgettable memories and experiences of a lifetime. The yatra concludes with spiritual fulfillment and a sense of having journeyed beyond life and death.
